Deepa Mehta’s latest film Beeba Boys was shot in and around Vancouver and portrays the lifestyle of Indo-Canadian gangsters.
The film is based on true events as reported in The Vancouver Sun by crime reporter Kim Bolan. Francois Marchand talks to Mehta about Beeba Boys, cultural identity, and her love of gangster movies ahead of the Vancouver International Film Festival.
In 1991 Mehta made her feature-film directorial debut with Sam & Me (starring Om Puri), a story of the relationship between a young Indian boy and an elderly Jewish gentleman in the Toronto neighbourhood of Parkdale.
Mehta is best known for her Elements Trilogy, Fire (1996), Earth (1998), and Water (2005), Canada’s official entry for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
