Brad Jalbert, British Columbia’s top rose expert and owner of Select Roses, a specialty farm-style home-nursery in Langley chats with Steve.
Brad has been selling and hybridizing roses since he started his nursery in 1990.
He is one of the most knowledgeable and respect authorities on roses in North America and some of his hybrids are now in demand in the U.S. as well as New Zealand and parts of Europe.
He is an energetic advocate of hardy, disease-resistant roses that require no spraying. He recently began working more closely with Kordes Nursery in Germany, the world-top breeder of super disease-resistant roses.
He says his basic philosophy about rose-breeding simply to “listen to my heart, and my rose friends and to try to breed roses that people will enjoy and can grow easily.”
He says it gives him great joy, after several years of intense testing, to offer new roses to the market that show superior performance and features that make them a pleasure for home gardeners to grow.
