For more than 20 years, Steve Whysall has been writing garden stories for The Vancouver. His full-colour In the Garden page appears every Friday in the At Home section. He also has a blog, In the Garden, which often includes stories and photos and items are do not appear in the paper. He has written five books: The Vancouver Sun’s Best Plant Picks, 100 Best Plants for Coastal Gardens, The Blooming Great Gardening Book, and 100 Best Plants for Ontario Gardens.
The first four were No. 1 bestsellers in B.C. He has also written for various garden magazines, including Gardens Illustrated, one of the top garden magazines in the UK. . In 1999, Steve was the first recipient of the Communicator of the Year Award, given by B.C. Landscape and Nursery Association. Steve and his wife, Loraine, have been married for 37 years and have three children, now all in their 30s.
At their home in Burnaby, the Whysalls have an English-style garden, comprising a mix of trees, shrubs, vines, roses and perennials Before coming to Canada in 1975, Steve worked for various newspapers in the U.K. including the London Evening News, Bristol Post and Nottingham Evening Post.
